Popular Culture, Digital Media and Teaching Innovation in Spain

This summer course program is aimed aT

Teachers of Spanish at K-12 and Community College levels in the United States and Canada:

  • Teachers of Spanish as a world language 
  • Teachers in bilingual and immersion programs 
  • Teachers for heritage speakers 
  • Teachers of other subjects with an intermediate Spanish level. 
  • Graduate and undergraduate students interested in teaching as a position. 
  • Administrators and other education professionals.


  • To become familiar with Spain and its diverse cultures. 
  • To perfect an understanding of the Spanish language. 
  • To update teaching materials and Spanish teaching methodologies.

How long?

Course: 60 hours during three weeks beetween June 26th and July 14th 2017. Four hours per day Monday through Friday, in the morning. Some cultural and complementary activities will be held in the evening and on weekends.

Classes will take place between 8:30 and 14 hours, Monday through Friday

Number of Participants per Group

Groups between 15 and 25 participants


Three credits every 60 training hours are recognized at some U.S. universities.


  • To provide teachers with materials and useful and innovative teaching resources following the Project Based Learning methodology.
  • To provide teachers of Spanish as a Second Language with competences on school and classroom resources management related to Spanish Popular culture
  • To increase their knowledge of Spanish history and culture through a number of popular culture excerpts, archives, libraries and media resources.
  • To reflect on the impact of having technological natives in our classrooms
  • To make the most of the possibilities of digital media and resources in the Spanish as a Second Language classroom. 
  • To introduce students to cooperative learning techniques.


1. Teaching Spanish through new technologies and social networks. (20 hours)

The aim of this course is to show different types of interactions in which students learn Spanish through the use of various social networks and across different applications, for mobile phones or computers. In addition, we will give special importance to cooperative learning among students, understood as the activity of small groups developed in the classroom.

2. PBL: Project-based Learning Methodology applied to Spanish FL class. (20 hours)

The aim of this course is to introduce participants in Project-Based Learning (PBL) and to explore the ways to apply it in the class-room. To begin with, we will try to answer the question Chomsky addressed some years ago: What do we know when we know a given language? From there, we can assess different existent methodologies to teach foreign languages. If, as we will see, what one knows when a given language is known is “how to do things with words”, then PBL it is presented as a very adequate and useful methodology.

3. Literaturas populares y de tradición oral. (20 hours)

The aim of this seminar is to explore the popular culture developed in Spain from the 15th century to our days. Spanish texts, printed material, records of oral narratives, iconographic representations will be analyzed, and also others from European and American countries, in a comparative approach that will provide a better understanding of our current cultures. Visits to historical archives and libraries related to Spanish popular culture will be made. Finally, we will explore different possibilities in order to use this cultural heritage as a teaching material.


This course is taught by University Professors and Lecturers with a solid teaching and publishing record both in Spain and in the US. A dynamic approach with strong teacher/ students’ interaction will be used. In class activities will be complemented with active out of class ones as an inherent part of the learning process.

Day trips to the coastal villages of Altea and Calpe, the village of Guadalest in the mountains, etc. These activities will be paid directly to the University. 

Board and Lodging:

Family stays or individual room in university dorms. The price includes full board and lodging. Should the student want to consider other options, like renting or sharing an apartment, please write to Dr. Raquel Blave at (subject: “Curso profesores”) before April 30th. We will do our best to try to accommodate your requests.

Health Insurance:

Health Insurance is provided through a Spanish Health Provider. This will be valid throughout the duration of the Course. Insurance covers visits to the doctor, hospitalization and some pharmaceutical expenses prescribed by Spanish doctors during the three weeks of the Course. Please note some Co-payments may apply. Regular check-ups and chronic diseases are not included. 

Course Credits:  

Course credits can be transferred in some American universities. For further details, please check the following webpage.


If the participant is not interested in transferring the credits obtained in the Course, the only requirement is their attendance and participation in the classes. The participant will receive an Attendance Certificate.

The UCV will provide all participants who have attended at least a 90% of the scheduled classes with an attendance certificate and an academic transcript (grades will follow the American grading system).

If the participant wishes to transfer the credits obtained in the Course, they will need to do a final presentation. The participant will receive an academic certificate including the number of credits and the grade obtained according to the American system (letter grade). The final grade breakdown is the following: 

  • Participation: 30% 
  • Assignments: 35% 
  • Final presentation: 35%
